Discover early Texas land history with the Spanish Collection at the Texas GLO, the most complete archive of pre‑1836 Spanish and Mexican titles. The talk covers East and Central Texas land grants and how shifting policies after Mexican Independence drew new settlers.
Carlos Varela is a native from El Paso, Texas. He graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso with a master’s and doctorate degree in History. His research examines land grant issues in Texas, Tejano displacement, and U.S.-Mexico diplomatic relations. Carlos is also currently serving as secretary of the Society of Southwest Archivists and previously served as president of El Paso’s Association of Applied Border History. Lastly, he currently serves as a Spanish translator and curator for the Texas General Land Office.
